The French Film Festival Aotearoa launches this week in Wellington, the capital city of Aotearoa New Zealand, for those reading from afar. What has this to do with wine, you might ask, aside from the glass or two that will be served at the launch of the 2025 programme?
The screening this week is of one of the highlights of the 2025 programme, The French Job, which outlines in comic details of art theft, based on a real story.
The story began on the night of 19 May 2010 when five paintings were stolen from the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, all estimated to be worth more than 100 million euros. While the paintings have never been recovered, the film made in homage to them is a frenetic comedy of what could have happened to these famous artworks.
Wine is an integral part of French culture and with that thought in mind, I am looking forward to indulging in both vin and film, French style.
The French Film Festival Aotearoa takes to the screens around the motu from 28 May and tours to cities and rural centres from that date.
